Fern Glade Reserve is just 3.9km from the city centre. It offers long walks along the banks of the Emu River and the chance to see platypus surfacing.
The Reserve, which also offers barbecue and picnic facilities and toilets, can be accessed by vehicles at the main entrance or from a second entrance 0.5km further up the river.
For those more adventurous take a bush walk to the lookout, more than a dozen species of native orchids have been noted along the walking tracks.
Vehicle access is restricted to the Reserve from dusk to dawn.
Fern Glade is featured in the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service book called 60 Great Short Walks, which offers the best of Tasmania's day walking opportunities.
