Cruise Ships

The City of Burnie has a 20-year history of providing a world-class meet-and-greet service to the cruise ship industry.

Building on a single visit in 1999, Burnie now welcomes more than 30 ships a season.  Cruise ship visits are a valuable part of the region’s tourism economy, with passengers and crew dispersing out to areas of Burnie and north-west Tasmania.

Burnie's Mayor, councillors and hard-working volunteers (also known as our Burnie Experience Experts) are on hand to welcome the cruise ship passengers to our wonderful city, rain, hail or shine.

We welcome our cruise visitors at the Burnie Discovery Hub in Civic Plaza, our Visitor Central on cruise ship days which provides the following visitor services:

  • Commercial operators selling their tourism experiences;
  • Makers selling their artisan products;
  • Mobile food vendors;
  • The Burnie Highland Pipe Band and Burnie Concert Bands;
  • Federation Street exhibition at the Museum; and
  • Performances and events at the Burnie Arts and Function Centre.

With over 70,000 passengers and crew coming to Burnie in 2022-23 alone, we are always on the lookout for new Burnie Experience Experts.  If you have a passion for people, love Burnie and would enjoy being able to help our visitors experience the best of what we have to offer – please register to be a volunteer today.

We appreciate you taking a moment to fill out our survey on your experience of Burnie.
